Garden - Maintenance

Recycle the rain

Don’t let that rainwater get away – we’ll show you how to make use of one of our most important  natural resources.   Why not start collecting and storing valuable rainfall to keep your fruit and vegetables watered – even when those inevitable hosepipe bans kick-in. A rain barrel or butt, is becoming an essential garden item for any household with a garden – even if it’s simply pots on a balcony.

A rainwater butt isn’t expensive and is surprisingly easy to fit. Be inspired and use these links to get you starting to collect rain in no time.

As well as the rain butt you’ll also need a rain trap. This diverts the rain from your downpipe into the water butt and back into the downpipe if the barrel is full so you don’t need to worry about overflows. You need to keep your rain butt raised off the ground so put it on bricks or a special stand from the manufacturer. And keep the lid on! One, it’s childproof and two, it prevents mosquitoes laying their eggs in it.

And a little light entertainment for you – make your own rain!

Couldn’t resist this little cool video – tune the volume up and enjoy it
