Food - Baking

Very dangerous chocolate mug cake!

You are either going to love me or hate me for passing this one on, because this cake is genius.  It has been doing the rounds of the email network for a while now, but today I succumbed and finally tried baking it. Quite frankly it’s brilliant.  It has to be the simplest cake that I have ever cooked. There is no washing up, apart from a mug and it can be cooked in minutes.

Ingredients

  • 4 tablespoons  of self-raising flour
  • 4 tablespoons sugar
  • 2 tablespoons cocoa
  • 1 egg
  • 3 tablespoons milk
  • 3 tablespoons oil
  • 3 tablespoons chocolate chips or (optional)
  • A small splash of vanilla extract and your favourite tipple
  • 1 large coffee mug

Method

1. Add the dry ingredients to your largest mug and mix them well.

2. Add the egg and mix thoroughly.

3. Pour in the milk and oil and mix well.

4. Add the chocolate chips (if you  are using), vanilla extract and a drop or two of your favourite tipple, then mix again.

5. Put your mug in the microwave and cook for 3 minutes at 1000 watts (high).

6. The cake will rise over the top of the mug, but don’t be alarmed!

7. Allow to cool and tip onto a plate

To serve

A totally dressed up version of this cake ready to serve to dinner guests, is shown at the top of this article. You could eat the whole thing yourself, but I would cut it in half as it serves two generous portions.

If you are feeling really naughty you could either serve it with thick cream or Baileys Cream. It’s also delicious with home made strawberry jam (check out our strawberry jam recipe in the links below).

And why is this chocolate cake so dangerous? Because now you are only 3 minutes away from chocolate cake at any time of the day or night. Enjoy!

Does it need to be self-raising flour or will plain do?

Hi Dave It does need to be self-raising flour - will edit the post to specify that - thanks!

Argh! I'm glad we don't have a microwave now, or that would totally destroy my attempts at eating healthily!

Tried it and used 2 mugs because we didn't have one large mug and it worked brilliantly. Next time I'll make chocolate sauce to go with it. We love it.

I make this all the time ! It's lovely ! What I do though is mix it in a bowl and put chocolate chips in the bottom of the mug before adding the cake mix, that way you get melted chocolate on top ! Yum !

I just made it with butterscotch chips and some amaretto - luscious! May try to experiment and try making a plain sponge with almonds and cherries

Woah! I have just made this cake and it tastes fantastic. I love to cook but baking cakes is not my thing - too much washing up - but this recipe has changed my life forever.
