Using mind power to control your money urges
We’re surrounded by opportunities to buy. The reasons why we buy also become confused thanks to the money we spend on advertising and marketing. “We end up being encouraged to buy, not because we need these things, but because they will make us more attractive, younger, well-known, superior, or, at least, that’s what the advertising seems to be telling us,’ says Roger Elliott, whose organisation trains therapists to help people overcome a gamut of fears, phobias and bad habits – from overeating and smoking to fear of snakes and issues to do with money.
Because, while advertisers may have billions at their disposal, we have something even more valuable – what’s going on inside our brains and our ability to do all sorts of extraordinary things just by ‘putting our minds to it.’ Hypnosis, self-help and relaxation techniques can help.
Is hypnosis the key to a healthy bank balance?
People can assume that hypnosis is nothing more than a fairground trick involving swinging watches and people behaving like chickens. But it’s increasingly recognised as a very powerful therapy that helps people ‘reframe’ bad habits and bad experiences. It can help us relax and, while in that relaxed state, open our minds to new ways of seeing life’s challenges.
“In hypnosis, you can still think logically but you also have access to the ’software’ of your mind so that you can update instinctive emotional and physical responses,” explains Mark Tyrell, who works with Roger. Mark previously worked for the European Therapy Studies Institute, the UK’s largest independent NHS and Social Services trainer, delivering psychotherapy training to health professionals. He has a particular interest in treatment for anxiety conditions.
Kickstarting success
Roger and Mark decided that there were more people who’d benefit from the advanced hypnosis they use than they’d ever be able to see personally (or train other hypnotherapists to see). So they launched >> HypnosisDownloads.com.
The Hypnosis website has over 550 self-help audio tracks, like the ones mentioned above, designed to help people overcome a whole range of personal challenges. Other self help audios cover area s as diverse as fear of dogs and dentists to improving your golf swing (search for subjects that interest you using the Search tool below).
“Hypnosis is a safe environment to ‘try out’ new behaviours and emotional patterns before you experience them for real,” explains Mark. “For example, sports people who use hypnosis learn new quicker and more accurately. So hypnosis gives you more control of yourself and your life, it’s natural and gives you instant benefits and it’s a way of ‘trying on’ and establishing new patterns of emotional response and behaviour.”

I think this is a brilliant idea. You would think that, as a psychologist, I would poo poo this for being too touchy feely, but it makes great sense and hypnotherapy can help in so many ways. When we are stressed about money, we start to focus on all the negative issues about lack of money and not coping. Hypnosis not only helps you to relax abou things, but it gives you the chance to stand back and re frame your problems and helps you to find new ways of taking control of your life.
