Did you know that every year over 2.5 billion Christmas cards are thrown away in the UK alone. Not only is this filling up landfill sites, but it is also a huge waste of paper and trees. What a waste! Instead, we’ve got some great Christmas ideas for you to make with them. Read on…
Of course you can recycle your cards and a number of stores run recycling initiatives, such by taking them as Tesco or WHSmith in the UK. But here at Make it and Mend it we prefer to adopt a more creative approach to our recycling and we believe that with a little bit of snipping and a little bit of sticking you can remake your old Christmas cards into lovely decorations for your home.
What I like about reusing old Christmas cards is that you can use every part of them. Not just the main picture, but the insides as well. The poems inside can make really interesting little boxes and stars – and you can add a personalised message on them.
These step by step guides and clear photos will show you how to make…
» Christmas 3D stars that you can hang as decorations or use as gift tags
» Hanging boxes to adorn your tree or as personal touch to table settings
» Neat little gift boxes that fold into place – not need for glue or tape
Plus we have a downloadable guide containing templates for each design
» Templates for gift boxes and stars from Make it and Mend it
Tip Don’t worry if you haven’t got any old Christmas cards to hand, you can use any greetings cards, or you can always buy new card or stiff paper from any craft or art shop. But don’t throw this year’s cards away. Put them away with the decorations and you will have a great supply of free card for next year’s projects.

What a great way to use up all your old Christmas cards. I could do this with birthday cards as well.
