How to decoupage a kitchen cupboard door

Making over your kitchen cupboards is rewarding in itself, but you don’t have to stick to the tried and trusted simple paint job.  Decoupage – using printed paper to create effects – is a great way to add some individuality to your doors – and your kitchen.

You will need

  • Kitchen cupboard door
  • PVA glue
  • Paint brush
  • Paper of your choice (we used an old copy of the Beano – but it could be gift wrap, old books, newspapers or something you created yourself)
  • Scissors/scalpel knife
  • Cutting board
  • Varnish
  • Paint brush

Step one – prepare your door

Spending a little time preparing your cabinet doors will save you lots of time and tears later.

Step two  – paint your door

Follow these instructions for creating a good finish.  If you are only decoupaging the centre panel you don’t need to paint the whole door just the outside panel.

Step three – prepare your paper

While your cupboard door is drying start preparing your paper to apply to the door.  Use any paper you like, or buy specialist decoupage paper.  Choose the images you  like and cut them out.  Practice arranging and grouping the images together before you start to stick them.

Step four – apply the paper

Water down PVA glue and use a paint brush to apply the paper to the door – about half and half of PVA and water.  Start with the larger background images and slowly build up the images until you have the desired effect. Don’t be sparing with the PVA, but make sure it’s good and thin to get an even surface.

Step five – varnish

Once your design is dry, finish off by applying several coats of polyurethane varnish. Leave each coat to dry thoroughly before applying the next coat. Given them a quick rub with fine sandpaper between coats to ensure a good surface for the next coat.
