How to make  stars from old

Christmas cards

These little stars are really easy to make, but incredibly effective. You can use them to decorate the tree, hang them around the house, use them as gift tags or even Christmas cards again. What I love about these stars is that you can use all parts of the card.  Don’t just think that you can only use the picture on the front, be creative and try using the writing inside.

You will need…

  • Used Christmas cards, other greetings cards, or alternatively, you can buy sheets of card from a craft store (hologram and glitter card is really effective)
  • Template (the download for this is at the foot of this article)
  • Cutting board
  • Scissors or craft knife
  • Pencil
  • Ruler

Step 1

Download template and cut out the shape.

You can redraw, or resize the template on your computer, to make it larger, or smaller, to fit the cards you have.

Place template on to back of card and, with a soft pencil, draw around the outside of the template.

Step 2

Remove template and cut the card

This will leave you with a flat, 2D star. Place card star face up on a cutting board.

Mark the centre of the star and using a ruler and a pair of scissors, or knife, score along the longer dashed lines indicated on the template, from the centre to the points of the star. Be careful if you are using a craft knife as they are very sharp and could cut right through the card!

Step 3

Flip the star over a place face down on the cutting board.

Score the card along shorter lines indicated.

Step 4

Using the scored lines as a guide gently bend the card into shape.

Step 5

Using a hole punch – punch a hole at one tip and attach ribbon or string.

You can add more decoration, such as glitter, if you want to.
