Just because something is no longer fit for purpose doesn’t mean that we have to throw it away – it might be that it’s fit for a new purpose. Upcycling old furniture can mean that you can make your own really unusual garden furniture. I had an old sofa that had been sitting in the garage for months and was tattered and torn, but with a little love and elbow grease I upcycled it into a gorgeous new piece of garden furniture. This old sofa now sits on my terrace with herbs growing underneath and through it.

Remove all the old upholstery – including all fabric and tacks.
Step two

Remove all the old springsn -The springs are lovely, but no good for garden, so I’ve kept them for another project.

I made a new seat base and back by attaching battoning (strips of wood) to the frame.
Step four

I sealed and treated all the wood for outdoor use and then decorated the arms and the back with mosaic from old china.
