Update your kitchen cupboards with sticky back plastic

Painting your kitchen cabinets is a really cheap and easy way to refresh your kitchen.  But think wider than painting a single colour…  you can have loads of fun in the kitchen with different effects.

Try lots of different colours on different doors - how to paint kitchen cupboard doors… or decoupage them.  But the easiest way to bring a little glamour to the kitchen is to use trusty old sticky back plastic.

You will need

  • Sticky back plastic such as Fablon (see Amazon’s great selection)
  • Sugar soap
  • Fine grade sand paper
  • Good quality paint brushes
  • Primer
  • Good quality oil based wood paint or specialist melamine paint
  • Door handles (optional)

Measure the centre panel of your door and mark out shape onto your sticky back plastic.  Cut sticky back plastic to size.

Now comes the slightly tricky part…  try to resist the temptation to just rip off the back.   The knack to applying sticky back plastic is to do it slowly…  bit by bit, and make sure that it’s smooth before you move to the next section.  To do this peel away about 2 cm of the backing and place the sticky back plastic in the right position.

Smooth the attached piece of plastic making sure there are no bubbles.  Peel more of the backing off. Repeat the process until all the backing is removed. When the sticky back plastic is in position smooth and trim any loose edges with a scalpel knife.
